MuayThai Boran (MTB) is the ancient style of Thai Boxing from which Muay Thai originated. The origins and history of Muay Thai are unknown with historical documents mentioning very little of it; mostly in ancient Thai laws and in chronicles (especially with reference to military events or festive affairs), or in literature. Dating back hundreds of years (at the birth of the Thai nation), tribes of Thai people had to constantly fight to protect themselves against their aggressors in the South of China before moving South East to settle in ancient Siam, which we now call Thailand. Along the way the Thai people developed the fighting arts utilizing fists, elbows, knees and legs to combine with the usage of hand held weapons (long swords, poles, spears, etc.) to gain advantage against their opponents.
MTB was originally developed for self-defence and also taught to the Thai military for use in warfare. Even in the historic record of year 1350-1767 A.D. The Tiger King of Ancient Capital Ayutthaya (Prajow Sear) himself had to learn as part of their fighting strategy. He loves it so much and disguise himself to challenge many top fighters. As Its fighters were highly respected and selected the best were enlisted into the King’s royal guard regiment called “Tanaileuak” This physical and mental discipline is famously known as “the art of eight limbs” because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and feet. The hands become the sword and dagger; the shins and forearms hardened in training to act as armor against blows, and the elbows to strike opponents like a heavy mace or hammer while the legs and knees being the axe and staff. The body operated as one unit. Also, it incorporates vise-like grappling and ground fighting techniques in the art/system.The story of how a famed Thai boxer late in the March 1770 AD named Nai Khanomtom who fought for his freedom when he was in captivity of Burmese Kingdom is the most famous folklore. His defeat of 10 Burmese boxers one after another in a row including their nation’s champion got him rewarded with his freedom and March 17 has since been marked and celebrated every year as National Muay Thai Day in Thailand.
